Smaller iPad tablet now confirmed

The US newspaper New York Times finally confirmed in an article the rumors of an upcoming iPad tablet with a smaller screen and a lower price after initial reports with the same information surfaced in The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.
The upcoming tablet known so far as iPad mini or iPad nano will compete with the successful and cheap Amazon Kindle Fire and Google Nexus. Expected to feature a 7.85-inch display, which will still be larger than the ones found in competing tablets, the smaller iPad will sell for around 200 USD – a very competitive price.
Apple is now in a hurry to grab a big market share in the low-end tablet market – where the Kindle Fire is king nowadays. Surprisingly for the tech giant budget-oriented tablets captured the attention of more buyers than expected who now purchase them by the millions.
Interestingly enough a few years ago the late Steve Jobs rebuffed the idea of having an iPad with a small screen. Back then a 7-inch tablet was thought to be good enough to surf “in the bathroom” only. The later 9.7-inch size was released because Jobs and his tablet colleagues though the screen size would be sufficient enough to allow “great tablet apps” saying the smaller screen just compromised too much.
The iPad mini or whatever it will be called may become available later this year with the Christmas period being most likely to see a 7.85-inch iPad launch.

French scientists suggest new extremely durable storage method

Did you know that popular 120 mm optical discs promise to keep your information for up to 100 years?
This may seem enough for most people as sadly pretty much all of them will be dead in a hundred years but for some tech people and scientists a hundred years just don’t cut it. This is why a team of French scientists has proposed a new technology that promises to keep your data for as long as 10 million years!
The new tech, which is still in early stage, is based on 200 mm sapphire discs that are covered on the inside with a thin layer of platinum. It is exactly the platinum coating that provides the longevity. As to information – it is stored as extremely small text pages that can be read by using a microscope only.

But what’s the goal of such long life discs? For one thing they may provide crucial information to future generations – for example where radioactive waste was stored.
The new technology is not free from drawbacks though. First one is pricing – a single disc costs EUR 25 000. Second, using human language to write information might mean that in the future the language may have become ancient or even extinct. Another problem is which language to use.
Despite the problems the new technology seems promising so it may even see wide use in a few decades.

Giada i53 – A Book-Sized Computer

First announced at the Computex 2012 the Giada i53 is a new small form factor PC that boasts with its size – about as large as a book. It is now getting closer to market, which means there’s more information about it – and despite its humble size it packs quite a bit of punch!
The Giada i53 mini PC comes with Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors although it is not known which generation is inside – most likely Ivy Bridge. The i53 also supports up to 4 GB of DDR3 RAM – it may not be enough for most PC enthusiasts but it’s more than enough for everyday use. A 500 GB hard drive provides storage and the graphics is based on the Intel HD 4000 graphics chip, which is fast enough for a large number of (older) games and perfect for 2D usage.
As to connectivity the Giada i53 provides four USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, VGA output, as well as Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth and a card reader.
The Giada i53 will be available in two versions – with a light gray or black chassis that is just 26 mm thick.
Expected on the market very soon the basic Giada i53 mini PC will cost USD 520.

Nokia Leaks Info On Upcoming Phones

Users of the Nokia Remote Device Access service may have noticed a leak on the service that mentions an upcoming smartphone – the Nokia Lumia 910. Apart from it though the Finnish tech giant has leaked info on more phones to come.
There’s a total of six new smartphones that were leaked on the Nokia Remote Device Access service and the Lumia 910 is just one of them with the rest being the Nokia Lumia 510, Nokia Belle 805, Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 950 and Nokia Lumia 1001. Unfortunately except for the names nothing else is known.
Still smartphone experts speculate that the new Lumia devices may be different versions of Windows Phone for different carriers while others expect the Lumia 510 to be the successor to the 500 with the Belle 805 being the 808 PureView minus the camera. Other experts suggest these smartphones will be all Windows Phone 8-based after the fiasco with the current Lumia generation.
Which suggestion is correct? Sadly, this remains to be seen.
