The 8th Wonder of the World Had a Keyboard!

At least that was the opinion of no less an inventor and visionary than Thomas Edison, who evidently admired the Linotype machine's ability to replace hand-set type with a keyboard-based typesetting system, and thereby create printed publications ever faster and cheaper. Of course, that advance quickly made obsolete the skills of traditional type setters, so there's some irony in Linotype: The Film singing the praises of the now-obsolete techniques of the Lino operators. Perhaps in the same vein there will some day be a movie called Flash: The Film? Or perhaps not. In any case, this nicely-crafted ode to Linotype machines and their operators recently began screening, with a DVD scheduled for release in early summer. More details are available on the film's site.
